Arts Collaboratory

Open Call 2018 Residency opportunity in Colombia

Artists, curators, or researchers, related to Arts Collaboratory participants in Africa, Asia and Middle East.

This residency is exclusively for resident citizens from the Arts Collaboratory countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It welcomes proposals from diverse cultural agents, artists, writers, researchers, curators, and others interested in creative projects, research, and collaboration within the context of the four AC organizations in Colombia (Lugar a Dudas in Cali, Más Arte Más Acción in el Chocó, Casa Tres Patios and Platohedro in Medellín). Applications for the residency can include stays in a maximum of 2 of the organizations above.

The residency is based on a desire to promote knowledge exchange, the melding of social and cultural contexts, dialog, experimentation and the intersection of disciplines in order to generate collaborative processes in the host spaces. The residencies are open to diverse practices, offer a range of opportunities and seek processes that involve creative risk taking, which can expand the limits of the participant’s experiences. Applicants should be willing to engage in the host organization’s programs and documentation processes, which will be shared via the different Arts Collaboratory platforms and will serve as a basis for the development of pedagogical tools and for the presentation of the results of the residency. Upon returning to their country the resident commits to sharing their experience and knowledge with their community.

The residencies can extend from 6 to 8 weeks between 1st February and 30th June 2018.

Descriptions of the programs, interests and profile of each organization in Colombia and links to their web sites can be found at the end of this document. Please review them before beginning the application process.

  1. Interest of the proposal and connection of the proposal with the host(s) organization profile and lines of work.

AC Organizations that can receive residents for 2018:

Casa Tres Patios (Medellín)

Casa Tres Patios is a contemporary art center in Medellín, Colombia. Since 2006 it has focused on artistic practices, research and pedagogy. The residency program is an integral component in all of its processes, and the work of the residents forms an essential part of the knowledge base that is shared via exhibitions, public discussions, publications and digital platforms. The current area of interest and the focus of the research is New relationships with capital. The proposals for residencies that will be considered should include some aspect that is related to this topic. http://www.casatrespatios.org/

lugar a dudas (Cali)
lugar a dudas is a contemporary art center operating in Cali, Colombia since 2005. As part of its activities, the space presents art exhibitions, film series, workshops and lectures. The space offers an extensive library on Contemporary Art, a publication program, and an International Art School operating on a yearly basis between July and August. The residency program offers opportunities to artists, curators, writers and other art and culture field agents to explore and examine different forms and formats of interaction which will provide collaboration material between individuals, disciplines, and subjectivities, as a starting point for art practices, critical thought, pedagogy, and social agency.

Más Arte Más Acción

Más Arte Más Acción’s base is located on Colombia’s Pacific Coast in the Chocó rainforest, a region that represents one of two social and environmental poles that move further apart as urbanisation and capitalism expand. The region is the source of inspiration for artists and other professionals who are invited to explore wide-ranging social and environmental issues. We invite artists, writers and researchers to propose projects that investigate artistic ways of creating a dialogue between these poles, to interact, cooperate and learn from one another.

Through our residency programme, entitled Space for Critical Thinking, we invite people to explore humanity's dream of creating a better world. Conceptual ideas and real processes are generated in association with MaMa’s team.  The residency can take place exclusively at the Chocó Base. However, we also encourage participants to explore their ideas in Colombia's urban context, in association with our Arts Collaboratory Partners in Cali and Medellín: Lugar a Dudas, Platohedro and Casa Tres Patios.

Platohedro

The Platohedro Corporation is a non-profit organisation that functions as collaborative creative platform in the city of Medellín, Colombia. Since 2004 it has been dedicated to the permanent investigation of free culture, self-education, artistic creation and technological experimentation. These processes are guided by the search for a collective well-being based on the philosophy of Buen Vivir (Good Living) and Buen Conocer (Good Knowing).

Platohedro's lines of work contemplate experimentation, research and project development oriented towards:
-Art and expanded education (radical pedagogies, collaborative methodologies of creation, research and knowledge exchange); re-signification of traditional technologies and popular knowledge; experimental art; art & technology.

-Free and shared communication (community media, audiovisual, graphic and sound creation and experimentation)

-Community art, permaculture and urban space activation; body & technology ecologies, nutriment, health and gender.

-Alternative cultural management and curatorial studies.

Our intention is that residents integrate in an organic way to the dynamics of the collaborative space and our programs. We have reached this in a fluid way with La Jaquer EsCool, our hacker school for experimentation on different types of technologies and knowledges, where residents make an exchange with workshops, labs, and open presentations with the participants that take part into the project. This exchange is free of charge and open to the participation of other people.
